Marquette General Brain and Spine Center

The Brain, Spinal Cord & Nervous System

The brain. The spinal cord. Nerves branching throughout the human body ... the domain of the Marquette General Brain and Spine Center.

Neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, and other professionals use brain wave recordings, nerve-conduction testing, and imaging technologies such as magnetic resonance imaging and spiral CT scanning. These skilled and sensitive hands diagnose and treat stroke, traumatic brain injury, brain and spinal tumors, headache, multiple sclerosis, seizures, muscular dystrophy, and other neurological disorders.

Blue Distinction Centers Spine Surgery is also a new Blue Distinction designation that is awarded to medical facilities exhibiting a commitment to quality care, resulting in better overall outcomes for spine surgery patients.

Blue Distinction Centers Spine Surgery will have demonstrated experience in offering comprehensive inpatient spine surgery services, including discectomy, fusion and decompression procedures. Candidates for this designation must also submit clinical data to establish that they meet objective, evidence-based thresholds for clinical quality.

Brain surgery can involve lasers, microscopes, and radiation with the guidance of CT or MRI to pinpoint brain tumors or weaknesses in blood vessels. Electrodiagnostics are used in surgery as well.

Physician clinics are offered in nine communities, and shared resources such as the EEG Network and proactive training in stroke care extend services of the Upper Michigan Neuroscience Center to hospitals, healthcare providers and patients throughout the U.P. In addition to traveling specialists, full-time neurologists also serve some communities.

Brain and Spine Center professionals work closely with emergency medicine physicians, who are the first line of defense in the event of brain attack (stroke) or trauma to the brain or nervous system. These physicians decide whether tPA, a revoluntary clot-busting drug for stroke should be administered, and receive trauma patients from throughout the region.

The physicians and staff of the Brain and Spine Center also work closely with the Marquette General Rehabilitation Center whenever needed to maximize the outcome for Brain and Spine patients.
