Who can become a donor?
People of all ages and medical histories should consider themselves potential organ, tissue and eye donors.Your medical condition at the time of death will determine what can be donated. Medical criteria changes regularly.

Because of the critical need for more transplantable organs, there is also a growing number of living donors. Living donation can include a kidney, part of a lung or a section of a liver. For more information on living organ donation, visit our Resources/Links.

Why donate?
Almost 100,000 people are waiting for an organ transplant in the United States. Your decision to donate your organs can save the lives of up to eight people, and directly improve the lives of up to 50 people through tissue donation. After an organ or tissue transplant, people can return to work, school and their family -- all because an unknown hero gave them the gift of life.

How do I express my wish to become an
organ, tissue and eye donor?

1. Fill out the Michigan Organ Donor Registry form.
2. Once received, the Michigan Secretary of State will mail you
a Donor sticker to place on the front of your driver's license or state ID.

What is the Michigan Organ Donor Registry?
The registry is a confidential, 24 hours a day, computerized database that documents your wish to become an organ, tissue and eye donor.

How do I confirm that I am registered?
If you already have the Donor designation on the front of your driver's license or state ID, you are registered. If not, you will need to register by filling out the Michigan Organ Donor Registry form.

What if I am already on the Michigan Organ Donor Registry?

You must sign up again to receive the Donor sticker for your driver's license or state ID.

Can I indicate specific organs and/or tissues for donation?
No, because medical technology advancements, the types of organs and tissues used for transplantation and research may change. It is best to share specific organs and/or tissues for donation with family and/or your patient advocate.

Why is it important to register my wish to become a donor?
Upon every hospital death, Gift of Life Michigan is notified. Having your donor registry form on file helps to ensure that your decision to become a donor is carried out. Even when you sign the donor registry it is ESSENTIAL THAT YOUR FAMILY KNOWS your wishes.

Will doctors work as hard to save my life if they know I am an organ, tissue and eye donor?
Yes. Every effort is made to save your life before donation is considered. By law, the medical team treating you must be seperate from the transplant team.

Are there any costs to my family?
No. It costs nothing to donate organs or tissues, and no costs associated with the donation are passed on to the donor's family or estate.

Can normal funeral arrangements be made?
Yes. Donation does not interfere with having a funeral, including open casket services.

Will my religion approve of donation?
Most major religions approve of organ, tissue and eye donation, and consider donation one of the highest acts of compassion and generosity. For a list of specific religious organizations and their positions on donation, click here.

Gift of Life, in collaboration with the Michigan Eye-Bank, provides all services necessary for organ, tissue and eye donation.

In Michigan, more than 3,000 people are in need of a life-saving organ transplant. Nationwide, more than 100,000 people face that same dire need. Many, many more also await life-enhancing tissue and cornea transplants. Organ and tissue transplantation is a routine practice that can dramatically improve -- and even save -- the lives of those suffering from vital organ failure, or those suffering from bone defects, burns and blindness. Given this second chance, transplant recipients return to normal, productive lives.

IMPROVED surgical techniques and new anti-rejection drugs now permit successful transplantation of organs and tissues, such as heart, lung, kidney, liver, pancreas, cornea, bone, skin and other soft tissues.

For many diseases, organ transplantation is the only accepted medical treatment to offer a chance of survival.

Heart and liver donations are a matter of immediate life and death. Donated kidneys eliminate weekly dialysis treatments. A donated pancreas may "cure" someone's diabetes. Donated eyes not only provide corneas for sight-restoring corneal transplantations but also vital eye tissue for other surgical procedures and for research into blinding eye disorders.

Bone transplants may avert a need for amputation; skin donations save the lives of severe burn victims. State, regional and national computerized networks keep track of potential recipients.

The death of someone we love is one of the hardest things we will ever have to face. In the consuming grief which follows, it is difficult to imagine that anything positive could result.

Consider the case of Brian, a seventeen-year old who loved baseball and his 10-speed bicycle. One evening last spring Brian was struck by a car while riding home from his high school. He was rushed to the emergency room with severe head injuries.

Emergency surgery was performed during the night but Brian was finally declared "brain dead." Brain death is a condition in which all indications of brain function have permanently ceased. With the use of a machine called a respirator breathing was mechanically maintained and his heart continued to beat. Brian's parents and older brother were grief-stricken and in a state of shock.

But Brian's story does not end here. His nurse in the Intensive Care Unit knew that everything possible had been done to save Brian's life. She huddled with the organ procurement organization to discuss with Brian's family the option of donating Brian's healthy organs and tissues to others in great need. Both mother and father agreed. The thought that good would happen to others gave them a large measure of comfort.

Brian's parents signed the permission form. Within hours skilled surgical teams removed Brian's organs and tissues and sped them on to waiting recipients. Brian's heart went to a 35-year-old father of two. Brian's kidneys went to a teacher who had been on dialysis for 5 years; the other kidney went to a young wife and mother of three youngsters.

Brian's eyes were removed so that his corneas could restore sight to two blind people. His donated skin helped save the life of a severely burned baby. Bone form Brian's legs and hips were removed so that a 14-year-old boy would not have to undergo amputation of a leg due to bone cancer and so that another child's severely deformed face could be reconstructed by a plastic surgeon.

From this single tragedy sprung new life, new health, new hope for nine of Brian's fellow humans and for nine American families.

For example, \[[ or \]].

Creating pages
There are two main ways to create a new page in your wiki library:

Create a link to a page which does not exist and then click on it to create the page:
This is the recommended way to create a page because it is easier for people to find the page when another page links to it. Links to pages that do not yet exist have a dashed underline.

Create a page that is not linked to any other:
In the Site Actions menu, click New Page. This will ask you for a name and then create that page in the current wiki library.

Managing your wiki library
You can manage the pages in your wiki library by clicking View All Pages on the Page tab of any page in the library.

Restoring a page
If you need to restore a previous version of a page, click Previous Versions in the Page tab at the top of the page. You can then click on any of the versions in the quick launch to view the page as it existed at that time. If you want to restore to a version, select it and click Restore this version in the toolbar.

Viewing incoming links
You can see which pages link to the current page by clicking Incoming Links at the top of the page. This will show you any pages which link to this page.

For more information about using Microsoft SharePoint Foundation-based wiki libraries, click Help on any Microsoft SharePoint Foundation page.

false,false,1
